Historic Tacoma Voices Concerns on Proposed Preservation Code Updates

Advocates Push for Better Preservation as City Considers Changes

TACOMA, WA – The Tacoma Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, August 6 at 5:30 PM to discuss proposed updates to the city’s Historic Preservation Code—a decision that could significantly impact Tacoma’s historic neighborhoods and landmarks.

Historic Tacoma has submitted a formal letter outlining key concerns and recommendations, urging the city to prioritize preservation while addressing affordability and sustainability. Key points include:

✅ Support for simplifying the historic district process by eliminating redundant Planning Commission review.
✅ Advocating for expanded tax incentives to include individual National Register landmarks and contributing properties.
⚠ Opposition to changes that could weaken demolition protections and reduce safeguards for historic resources.

"These updates must strike a balance," the letter emphasizes. "Preserving Tacoma’s character shouldn’t come at the expense of progress, but neither should progress erase our history."
